We have concluded the planned activities for the Centennial Celebration. We would like to congratulate all of you for your participation and for helping to make the 100th Anniversary of Boy Scouting in the United States memorable. From the Stream Cleanup service activity to the Adventure Base 100 Exhibition, we had continual and enthusiastic participation from Units in the Red-Tailed Hawk District. We would also like to recognize those who volunteered to assist with the delivery of the various activities.

Sincerely,
The Red-Tailed Hawk Centennial Committee

Our Vision: A Purpose-Driven Anniversary Celebration

The goal of our unit is to join with the National Council and the Heart of America Council to lead our Scouts, members and leaders in a purpose-driven 100th Anniversary Celebration … a coordinated effort with fellow Scouts and Scouters across the country to share the powerful and inspiring story of Scouting.

Without question, this will include unit, council, and national events around which we will gather to celebrate this important milestone. But, so too will this include an assertive and thoughtful effort to better communicate the tremendous value of Scouting in our area while engaging Scouts, leaders, alumni, family, friends, and the public in the celebration.

A purpose-driven celebration includes activities that are fun and inspiring — but also deliver meaningful results that help strengthen our unit and Scouting. With this as our celebration vision, we can conclude 2010 with more youth involved, more adults serving as volunteers, and more positive impressions and understandings of Scouting throughout our community.

Celebration Objectives

Our anniversary plan targets the same five objectives as national and council celebration activities.

  • Help others see how Scouting contributes to the quality of life in our community.
  • Instill pride within our membership for what the Scouting has been, is, and will be.
  • Reconnect with and re-engage Scouting alumni.
  • Strengthen ties between our units, District and fellow Scouts and Scouters throughout the area.
  • Celebrate with activities that are fun and inspiring for our members, invite other youth and adults to join in the fun of Scouting, and help our unit fund raising efforts.

Update on Service Project:

* Over 800 people contributing over 2000 hours of service!
* We have the update on how much debris we hauled out from the work day on the trail/creek:
(6) 1 ton dump truck loads
(5) pick up truck loads
(1) pick up truck load of entirely tires

Wow! Great job! We truly appreciate everyone's effort!

RTH A Shining Light Broadcast - July 31
Update on the Event: Over 160 people attended our gathering to view the broadcast from the National Jamboree. Our Chapter 3 OA group appreciated everyone who purchased tickets for the hot dog dinner to support their fundraising effort. Thanks for attending everyone!

Michael Samms has a few leftover patches if you'd like to purchase them for $2.00 each. Half the amount goes back to OA to support their activities. Catch him ar Roundtable.

Old Settlers Parade Entry - Sept 11
Around 500 people plarticipated in one of the largest Scout entries ever in any Kansas parade! RTH and TW had one massive Scout entry in the Old Settler's Parade on September 11.

HOAC Centennial Camping Extravaganza - Sept 24-26
Around 11,500 people attended the Centennial Campout at Naish. Although Saturday afternoon and evening activities were hampered by a little rain, Scouts had a great time celebrating our Centennial in this massive event. Hundreds of photos of the event can be found on the HOAC Facebook page.

Scout Out Hunger - Sept 11 and 18
Thank you to all the Scouts, Scouters, parents, siblings and other volunteers who helped the Red-Tailed Hawk District shine for this event. Overall, the HOAC Council gathered 200,000 pounds of food. The Red-Tailed Hawk District gathered almost 23,000 pounds of food. 11.5% of the total. This event came at a time when many other activities were underway, such as popcorn, extravaganza, school starting up, etc. We appreciate those who took the time to gather food for those unable to feed themselves without help from organizations such as Harvesters. Patches, for those Units reporting their totals by October 1st, will be distributed at the November Roundtable.

Below is a message from Lisa Pickard, Food and Fund Drive Manager

Michael:
Thank you so much for your kind words. We are so appreciative of Red-Tailed Hawk’s work on Scout Out Hunger. While the numbers were not where we expected them to be, your Scouts fed many, many needy people.
Please pass on our gratitude to everyone on your committee and the Scouts in your District – we loved working alongside them at the trailer and counting up the two truckloads of food they brought in!
Also, please let your troops know that they can call me anytime for a tour of our facility – sometimes seeing the next step of the process can really spur on more interest in eliminating hunger in the community (which is the ultimate goal!)
Lisa
